Generally Solid
What We Liked: The core of this app – the 3D letter puzzles – are exceptionally well done. I love the 3D puzzles from this developer; they’re really amazing. The memory/matching activities are also very solidly made with a variety of different approaches to really cement the connection between the spoken letter name and its written upper case form, whether through flipping letter tiles that say the letter names and display the images, or through picking out letters from a line up when asked for them by name. Audio memory match games also aren’t that common, so it’s nice to have that included as an activity to help strengthen listening and auditory discrimination skills. My children enjoyed the memory games and the 3D puzzles the most, but it’s nice to have a broad range of activities for them to choose from. Graphics are high quality and the background music is soothing and lovely, but is also easy to turn off if your child prefers silence. What We Didn’t Like: The app only includes upper-case letters – I always like it if there’s an option for upper or lower case, as 90% of all letters a child will encounter in books are lower-case. There are some issues with stroke direction in this app – many of the letters (around 30% or so) have directional arrows starting at the bottom line instead of the top line (where they traditionally start). Also, the app isn’t always responsive to the letters drawn – sometimes no feedback is given at the end of the letter formation – achieving positive feedback doesn’t require stroke direction that conforms to the arrows. No letter sounds are included – letter names only. Most of what this app does, it does well, but the letter-tracing portion just isn’t great overall. Overall: Super 3D Alphabet includes a nice range of games and activities to reinforce the connections between letter names and their upper case written forms. With five different activities included: 3D puzzles, two memory games (visual and acoustic), find the letters, and a letter tracing activity – there are a lot of reinforcement opportunities here. Some shine – like the puzzles – others are best passed – like the letter tracing – but overall there’s a nice assortment of solid activities in this app.
